Two Cuba-Destined Relief Ships Listed Lost following Leaving Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of missing sailboats loaded with aid cargo journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Naval Search Missions Launched
Mexico has deployed navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine total sailors, as stated by a navy statement.
The boats had been projected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, authorities reported.
Background of Aid to the Island
The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through widespread nationwide blackouts.
"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.
The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Earlier Aid Mission
Previously that week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.
That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, cycles and provisions.
Broader Geopolitical Climate
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.
The United Nations have since warned of ""critical" supply shortages, with in excess of fifty thousand surgeries called off in Cuba amid power shortages.
Political tensions have intensified lately, with comments from different leaders underscoring the delicate state of diplomatic ties.
In response to recent proposals, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.
The naval forces stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the sailors.
To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
