The people of Israel mark two-year remembrance of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks proceed
Israelis have come together across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed state memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the day's discussions finished without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies provision
- After-conflict governance of the region
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the abducted to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of the population desire the conflict to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and zone areas and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, described.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my smallest child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we look at the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Medical Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had accepted the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city indicated additional dead people had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the southern area, health workers stated.
