The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
