Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the acclaimed crime series

The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
