The British driver Lando Norris Secures First Formula One World Championship in Abu Dhabi In Spite Of Max Verstappen's Race Triumph.

With a performance full of nerveless racing, the McLaren driver has clinched his maiden Formula One world championship by taking a podium finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. That finish was enough for the British driver, despite the fact that Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

The driver performed precisely what was required in an incredibly intense contest at the Yas Marina Circuit, featuring a series of audacious overtakes, with impeccable work from both himself and his McLaren squad.

A Historic Feat for British Motorsport and The Team

By winning his first world championship, Norris is now the eleventh British driver to do so. This ends the team's drivers’ championship drought, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

It represents a stunning turnaround for the Woking-based outfit, from a nadir in the mid-2010s when they twice finished ninth in the constructors’ championship. The comeback has been led by boss Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an efficient team with a race-winning car.

A Tale of Two McLaren

Regarding the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had led the championship for much of the season, there was obvious disappointment at faltering in the closing stages. A series of poor performances and mistakes, such as a crash in Baku, were expensive. However, he finishes the season having demonstrated he is too world champion material. To have been so fast in only his third year in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.

Max Verstappen was also brilliant to force the fight down to the last race. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but having come back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having enough to overhaul Norris, ending up just two points behind.

Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Execution

Norris closed out his title with clinical precision to take the championship that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the previous two races. First a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable tactical decision in Qatar.

It was no little achievement for the driver in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He stuck with the team even during tough periods, convinced they would come good. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

Norris performed a remarkable job to stick at his task, maintaining his composure and belief during periods under the cosh. After losing the lead to Piastri earlier, he nonetheless worked at maximising what he could.

The Decisive Race

In the race, Verstappen held his first place through the first corner, but the three title leaders avoided contact. Piastri, starting on the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals quickly and displayed no signs of nerves in his race craft.

On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars at once, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris burst up the inside line, nearly completely off the track.

The incident was looked at by the stewards, with a few nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a time penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris settled the matter. This decisive charge without being held up was vital to his championship bid.

Contrasting Fates

As Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in form between the two was stark. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Italian team had been greeted with enthusiasm but has yielded what was comfortably his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a podium. He has appeared weary in the closing races and will aim to rebuild over the off-season.
