The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... Currently.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response

One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

The Central Mystery: Will the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.

“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
