Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
