Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
